These words are from another brother on another group discussing a figure named Bakunin (essentially tied to freemasonry) . Food for thought, if you will on secularism, freedom, and nafs connection with Shaytan, Audhubillah min-nishaytanir rajeem!

I now see the 'irresistible appeal of
Satan's call to 'freedom, power and liberty' from the
so-called tyranny of God.
So that's where the freedom movement comes from. They
mean freedom from God. I guess this also is what they
mean when they say they don't believe in the devil or
Satan, since in their view, the evil one is God, not
Lucifer, who freed man from 'slavery' to God, and
gave him the 'secret knowledge', immortality, power,
etc. The true 'dark side', if you will.
So that's why rebelliousness, deceit,secrecy,
aggression, lust and greed, is the primary trait, in
addition to the false cloak of piety or interest in
man's freedom. He frees himself from obedience to God
only to become a slave of his own base desires and
hence Satan. Its a clever trick. Its worked
marvelously. But once the game is for what it is, it
pretty pathetic.
Would it be fair to say then that true 'freedom' is
freedom from slavery to the ego (nafs), or the lower
self, and this can only be obtained through obedience
and peaceful surrender to Allah (God) alone in Tauhid.
This is in fact the essence of Islam. This is so
because you cant truly be free if you are slave to
your own lusts, fears, envy, greed, etc. And this
are the tools of Shaytan to lure you into this maze of
desires, where most people get hopelessly addicted to
and lost in they cannot get out without help. But
help requires supplication and humility, not arrogance
and conceit. And yet these are the two qualities that
freedom from God cultivates, making it almost
impossible to overcome. So in fact true freedom
comes from freedom from Creation, and service or
submission to the Creator. This is 'tauhid.'
Fascinating yet elegant in its simplicity. I suppose
this is why Lucifer or Iblis (the one who despairs of
God's mercy) tries to come at mankind in two ways:
1. corruption of tauhid.
2. corruption of the soul (heart) through cultivating
the nafs (base desires) until it overpowers it and in
fact commands the soul, which ultimately leads to
corruption of tauhid if left unchecked.
I suppose Bakunin mistakenly believed he would get
unlimited power and freedom by giving into his lower
desires and thus becoming 'enlightened'. In fact he
only destroyed his soul, which is eternal. If we
could peer into his grave, I suppose he'd have a
different opinion now.
