Can Bangladesh eradicate terrorism?
The Bangladesh government recently launched an all-out attack on what it claims “Islamic Militants”. This culminated in the recent capture of JMB leader, and some of his followers. The discussion about “militants”, some how over running the country has taken a momentum.
Pressure has been piling on the Bangladesh government from the U.S and the E.U., to curb and eradicate militancy from Bangladesh.
The recent arrest of the so-called militants has been hailed as a success of the government to stamp out terrorism. Everyone from the BNP, Awami League to the Islamic Party, Jamaat-e-Islam has come out condemning militancy and terrorism. The question is, can these parties eradicate or deal with terrorism?
The above-mentioned parties and most of, but not all, the parties are in some ways involved in terrorism and crime. Therefore, are these above-mentioned parties fit to condemn terrorism, let alone deal with terrorism? Is not there an old saying that charities begins at home, or fix your self before you try to fix others?
Parties such as the BNP, Awami League and jamaat-e-Islam for decades have been involved in crime such as racketeering, extortion, drug dealing, arms smuggling, murder and rape. Their student wing thugs are involved in political violence, illegal occupation of halls residences and murder. If one needed any proof, just look at the current situation at Eden College and Rajshahi University. The daily newspapers are replete with stories of these thugs animalistic behaviour. What a hypocracy!
I cannot believe it, when I see these shame-less leaders stand and talk about terrorism, when clearly they themselves are involved in terrorism, or patronise terrorists.
So, back to my original question, can Bangladesh eradicate terrorism? The answer is, why should terrorists eradicate terrorism. The JMB is a small fish, the big fishes are BNP-Jamaat and the Awami League in the league of terrorists.
