Wa'alaykum as-salaam
Brother, you and I and others need to seek ways of getting closer to Allah at all times and by all allowed means. I certainly have not reached a point where I am content with myself. I do not think I ever will, Allahu'alim.
There are many things that are almost common sense, or at least to me they are.
Certainly reading Qur'an, pondering our life, praying in Jumma't, praying Nafl or non-obligatory prayers, getting married, carrying Islaam to others, spending in the way of life, repenting to Allah sincerely for forgiveness for our sins.
Of course there are books and books on this subject, and I bet (not really betting) you can find some articles on the net. And these things are life long. Especially for those of us who may have grown up under Jahiliyyah Kufr Western lifestyles.
I think we have to build new concepts about life. We need to Make Islaam our life and what is pleasing to Allah first. We have to enjoy and seek closeness with Allah. We have to try and try and make du'a and make du'a for Allah to bring us closer to him, at the same time fulfilling the obligations he demands from us. Am I without sin? No. Will that stop me from trying? No. I will continue to try as long as Allah allows me, Insha Allah. Most days you are successful, perhaps some days you are not.
Living under Kufr is tough brother; believe me I know this perhaps better than most, but our obligations and accounting from Allah still hold.
This is why it pushes us not to be content living under oppression. Living under Systems that push us towards Haraam, wait, I should say train you from a baby towards Haraam or disconnecting from the Source of your Life, Allah and his Sharia. This is oppression to me. I do not like it, I am concerned about myself, my family, my sister or my brother caught up in a Kafir lifestyle. As one good brother of mine say, “Trying to out Kufr the Kafir.” Do we give up because we are living under Kufr? Of course not. We would not give up looking for Job if needed, so we should not give up on purifying ourselves. Is it harder without the Merciful system of Islaam that foster Islaamic values in the society and practically implements it as well? Yes it is.
We purify ourselves by fulfilling the fardh; of course, we have to start there if we have not already, how could we do purify ourselves if we did not do the well-known basics of Islaam? We must do the daily obligations while avoiding the daily sins. We should do the encouraged acts mentioned above (Reciting Qur’an, attending Masjid, Fasting). My mother-in-law would fast so much when she visited my family here in America. We should perhaps look at the raw pictures of our bro/sis Killed in the way of Allah. Does not this make us think?..We could be next…Maybe I want finish this post before my life ends??? Just because we are not over there, what makes us think we cannot be killed as if a fly on the windshield? We should surround ourselves around Muslims who are doing these things as well.. Like a common sense thing to do right? We need each other as well..we should send each other good emails that remind us of our Islaam, we should give each other sincere Salaams; encourage one another, Insha Allah. We should try and try and keep trying...and we need to keep in mind the punishment and the reward that is after this life.
Certainly one can see that living under Kufr is an extreme test of our Iman, but on the other hand we know that turning away from Kufr and towards Allah is real and we can feel it in ourselves each time we past the test
But for those of us who rise to the occasion and turn towards Allah and leave off sin. Allah says:
4:146 Except for those who repent, mend (their lives) hold fast to Allah, and purify their religion as in Allah's sight: if so they will be (numbered) with the believers. And soon will Allah grant to the believers a reward of immense value. I was discussing this particular question with some other brothers and one response I got was as follows:
whats scarier is the hidden kufr in the breasts of people, the inner idols that the worship obliviously and the deception that takes place from muslim lands.
The job is much harder to purify oneself in a land that generally has more distractions, but where would the struggle be if it was easy? sometimes you could live in the mountains away from all corruption and the idol within oneself would remain. Its not an easy process, and the best way to do it is find someone (ie an authorised spiritual master) who has treaded the path and 'cleansed' themselves who can take you by the hand and guide you through this rough track, without hurting yourself.

CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT: challenge of Living Islam in the West, Ferdeous Ahmed uploaded 17 Sep 2002

Beyond September 11th: The role of Muslims in the West
Lecture: The challenge of Living Islam in the West Date: 15th September 2002 Ferdeous Ahmed
Introduction
Today, we as Muslims in the west are faced with the dilemma. Should we integrate into the western societies and compromise our Islamic identity? Or should we reject the call for integration and isolate ourselves from the wider society? Unfortunately, these are the only two solutions that has been proposed.
Today, our situation in the west is similar to those of the early oppressed Muslims of makkah who migrated to Abyssinia.
Similarly, we migrated to the western lands because: The Justice of Islam was removed and replaced by the oppressive systems of kufr. The Just rulers of the Muslims were replaced by the agent rulers of the west who failed in their duty to look after the affairs of the Muslims. Our lands were divided and occupied by the kuffar as a result we were made refugees from our lands. Some were chased and persecuted because they stood up to the tyranny and challenged it. As a result we fled our lands like the Muslims who fled to Abyssinia.
Now we are:
5 million Muslims in France 2.5 Million Muslims in Germany Over 2 million Muslims in Britain Overall there are 23 million Muslims in Europe and over 6 million Muslims in the US from all over the Islamic lands.
We left our homes and loved ones with the hope of seeking a better future for our families and our friends.
How to face the challenges in the West?
Dear Muslim, the plain truth is, true security and prosperity in this world can never be gained without the just system of khilfah.
The Muslims that migrated to Abyssinia seeking safety were not spared from further challenges to their deen while living in Abyssinia.
The Quraysh continued their hostile pursuit against the Muslims in Abyssinia. They sent a delegation to An-Najjasi, consisting of Abdallah ibn Rabia and Amr bin Al-As, requesting the extradition of the Muslims.
The Muslims were summoned to the court of the NaJashi and that day Jafar bin abu Talib spoke on behalf of the Muslims.
Jafar saluted them, but did not bow down. They asked ‘ What’s wrong with you, why don’t bow down to the king?’
Jafar confidently and frankly replied “we only bow down to Allah, the almighty and Glorious.”
Amr ibn Al-As intervened and said, “They differ with you about son of Mary – they say that he is creation and a slave of Allah.” So as to create fitnah for the Muslims.
An-Najjashi asked, “what do you say about son of Marry”
Jafar replied by saying “we say that which is revealed to our prophet: he is Allah’s slave, Messenger, His word which He bestowed, and Spirit created by Him”
Najashi was satisfied with the response and he returned the gifts back to them (Qurayshi envoys) and sent them back empty handed.
O Muslim, reflect upon this incident! There is great lesson for us as Muslims living in the west.
The Muslims left makkah where they were persecuted hoping for a better future in a foreign land.
But when they reached their destination, they were tested again in the court of the Najjashi. But they passed their test with dignity and without compromise.
Jafar and the Muslims did not follow the customs of Abyssinia in bowing to the King. They stated clearly and confidently that they only bow to Allah the Almighty and Glorious.
That is because they were Muslims living in Abyssinia and not as ‘Abyssinian Muslim” following the customs of Abyssinia. Likewise, today we must view ourselves as Muslims living in the west and not as Western Muslims.
Which means that we must not bow down to false gods of the west, accept the rotten values of capitalism and change our Islam to suite the western culture.
We must live by the Islamic shariya
Naturally, it is difficult to practise Islam in the west; this is because of the kufr system, but this is not an excuse to abandon the Halal and Haram and live by Kufr.
We must follow the Islamic Sharia completely in all our affairs and not follow those who have no knowledge.
Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) said:
Ëõãøó ÌóÚóáúäóÇßó Úóáóì ÔóÑöíÚóÉò ãøöäó ÇáúÃóãúÑö ÝóÇÊøóÈöÚúåóÇ æóáóÇ ÊóÊøóÈöÚú ÃóåúæóÇÁ ÇáøóÐöíäó áóÇ íóÚúáóãõæäó
“We made for you a law, so follow it, and not the desires of those who have no knowledge” (TMQ Al Jathiya 45:18)
Muslims, we live in society, which brought nothing but misery to the people. We live in a society, which turns innocent children into criminals.
A recent example in America, where two brothers (Alex and Derek) aged 13 and 14 killed their father with a baseball bat while he was asleep, because their father would not let them play video games late into the night. This is the decadent reality of the western society.
We as Muslims must make sure that our sons and daughters are not like Alex and Derek.
Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) says,
íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÂãóäõæÇÞõæÇ ÃóäÝõÓóßõãú æóÃóåúáöíßõãú äóÇÑðÇ æóÞõæÏõåóÇ ÇáäøóÇÓõ æóÇáúÍöÌóÇÑóÉõ
“Oh you who believe, save your selves and your families from the hellfire, whose fuel is men and stones” (TMQ 66.6)
One of the greatest dangers to our children is the western education system. I can remember vividly, the kufr idea that was taught in my school.
I remember in biology they used to teach the theory of evolution, which says human beings evolved from apes.
I remember in physics they used to teach that energy is eternal, cannot be created or destroyed.
Not realising, these ideas contradicted my belief in Islam. Not realising Adam (as) is the father of mankind and not apes and monkeys. Not realising that Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) is eternal and energy is a creation of Allah.
I also remember RE (Religious Education) class, where the teachers used to say Islam is like Christianity and Judaism because they are all Abrahamic faith. Not realising that Islam is the only Haq and every other religions are batil.
And let’s not forget what happens in the playground. I remember the peer pressure to have girl friends, I remember this boy called Michael, who did not have a girlfriend and they used taunt him by saying he is a homosexual. They said so many times he actually believed them and became a homosexual.
This is the reality of western education.
This situation worries me greatly, Al hamdulliah, Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) has blessed with a son and a daughter. But I am worried that they may turn out to be like Alex and Derek or Michael the homo.
This is our challenge as parents living in the west. This is a matter of Jannah and Jahanam. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) will question us about our responsibility on the day of judgement.I know that I can’t truly protect my children without the khilafa state and the systems of Islam. But must do what we can to protect them and raise them as Muslims.
We as Muslims living in the west can set-up our own Islamic schools in our homes and communities. These schools should not be Islamic schools only in name, unfortunately some schools have set-up already but the still kufr.
A friend of mine who is teacher in Islamic school was saying that they are know teaching the children how to be good British citizen, they are teaching things like democracy.
We need to make sure our Islamic schools teach Islam and Islam only.
We need make sure that our children must know why there are Muslims.
So when our children read and memorise verses like;
Åöäøó Ýöí ÎóáúÞö ÇáÓøóãóÇæóÇÊö æóÇáÃóÑúÖö æóÇÎúÊöáÇóÝö Çááøóíúáö æóÇáäøóåóÇÑö áÂíóÇÊò áøöÃõæúáöí ÇáÃáúÈóÇÈö
“Behold! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, these are indeed signs for men of understanding” [TMQ Ale-Imran: 190]
That they know that we are Muslims because we are convinced about the existence of the Creator not because we our parents are only Muslims.
We need to make sure that they understand that prophet was not just a nice person with good morals. We need teach them that he was leader, judge, and commander of the Army.
We need to teach them the Islamic history.
We need to teach them how the Muslims ruled the world with Islam and spread justice in the world.
We need teach the Islamic history so that it gives confidence to our children that the Islamic system can solve the problems of the world. For example, we say look how over 60,000 people held a conference South Africa failed to solve one problem of the poor people of the world. And say to them in the time of khailfah Umer bin Abdul Aziz, that nobody was need of the Zakat money.
In addition we need to teach them the Islamic jurisprudence so that they act according to the Halal and Haram.
All of this with the hope that our children grow up to be the defenders and champions of Islam. Although, we are living here for now, there will come a time when our children will be called upon by the future Khailfah of the Muslims to assist and aid the Islamic state.
Like Jafar bin abu talib when he returned back from Abyssinia to the Islamic state, he was one of the Amir of Jihad in the battle of Muta against the Romans and fought he so bravely, and died as a shaheed with both of his arms chopped off. The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) named him Al-tayer – the flier. This is because Allah rewarded him with two wings in Jannah by which he flies with the angels.

continued
The poet of Islam –Hasan bin Thabit praising Jafar in the following verses,
“His reward is that of the shaheeds – a paradise of gardens, under a canopy of green. In Jafar we saw someone faithful to Muhammad, a man of decision when he commands. May there never cease to be in Islam men of Hisham’s line, permanent pillars of glory and the source of pride. They are Islam’s Mountains, and those around them are large rocks rising up to be magnificent, towering heights.”
O parents! Prepare your children to be leaders, politicians and generals for the future khilafah state by establishing Islamic schools and by taking all precaution to save them from western secular values.
If we do this then our children will have the same honour and reward of Jaffar bin Abu Talib. But if we neglect our duty, then remember that fuel of hell is men and stones.
Not only the schools are the source corruption but the society at large, one of the foundations of the society is Personal freedom.
Let us explore the meaning of personal freedom and expose it’s corruption.
Personal freedom has turned the society into an animalistic society, with no values and decency.
In the name of personal freedom, men and women decide how to dress and how to behave with the opposite sex. This has resulted in chaos and corruption.
Each year, 56,000 babies are born to teenage mothers out of wedlock in the UK
Today there are over 100,000 convicted paedophiles on the sex offenders register in the UK alone
One woman is raped on average every 11 minutes
One in five children (20%) in the UK have suffered sexual advances.
The cause of all this is the concept of personal freedom.
How do we as Muslims deal with these challenges? How do we ensure that our daughters are not “teenage mothers” without a husband? Or our sons don’t get a knock on the door one day and the girl says “ Remember me I am Tracy here is your son”.
We need to refer to the Islamic social system, which regulates the relations between men and Women. Islam believes in the idea “prevention is better then cure”. Islam has laid down certain rules, which prevent the society from lewdness and immorality.
In Western societies it is normal for men to look at women who they are not married to with lust. Islam has forbidden this type of action. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) said:
Þõá áøöáúãõÄúãöäöíäó íóÛõÖøõæÇ ãöäú ÃóÈúÕóÇÑöåöãú æóíóÍúÝóÙõæÇ ÝõÑõæÌóåõãú Ðóáößó ÃóÒúßóì áóåõãú Åöäøó Çááøóåó ÎóÈöíÑñ ÈöãóÇ íóÕúäóÚõæäó æóÞõá áøöáúãõÄúãöäóÇÊö íóÛúÖõÖúäó ãöäú ÃóÈúÕóÇÑöåöäøó æóíóÍúÝóÙúäó ÝõÑõæÌóåõäøó
Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) said, "Tell the believing men to lower from their gaze and to protect their private parts. That is better for them, Allah knows the details of what they do. And tell the believing women to lower from their gaze and protect their private parts” [TMQ An-Nur: 30-31].
In the western society it is normal for women to step out of their homes with layers of makeup, lipstick and wearing revealing clothes, Islam forbade all this so as to protect the society.
ÃíãÇ ÇãÑÃÉ ÇÓÊÚØÑÊ Ëã ÎÑÌÊ ÝãÑÊ Úáì Þæã áíÌÏæÇ ÑíÍåÇ Ýåí ÒÇäíÉ æßá Úíä ÒÇäíÉ
“Any women that uses perfume and walks past men in order for them to smell her fragrance; she is a fornicator” [Tirmidhi & Abu Dawud].
Also, Islam has prevented situation where the men and women are to be in any secluded places.
We as Muslims need to abide these ahkhams and teach them to our sons, daughters, wives so as to protect our morals and honour.
All of this does not mean that Islam denies the natural feelings and the need to interact with the opposite sex.
Islam allows controlled and safe interaction between men and women through the means of marriage.
Those of us who are young and single, we should protecting ourselves by marrying early.
The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:
íÇ ãÚÔÑ ÇáÔÈÇÈ ãä ÇÓÊØÇÚ ãäßã ÇáÈÇÁ É ÝáíÊÒæÌ æãä áã íÓÊØÚ ÝÚáíå ÈÇáÕæã ÝÅäå áå æÌÇÁ.
"O youth. Whoever among you can afford to marry should marry, because it will help him refrain from looking at other women, and guard his modesty. And whoever is not able to marry he should fast because it will protect him" [Muslim].
We should remember that marriage is not only there to satisfy our desires only, the relationship is one of companionship and it’s one of the mercies of Allah.
Trade & Commerce
Dear Muslims, We also face challenges regards to our provisions and income.
In the capitalist system we have seen so much corruption, fraud and deceit, this is because the economic system is based upon on the principle “greed is good” and “survival of the fittest”.
We are all aware of the so-called plumbers & mechanics from hell that fix nothing, but charge hundreds of pounds to innocent customers who are unaware that all they have done is changed a nut or a bolt that actually costs a few pence.
But it does not stop here; we have all seen the massive accounting scandals in corporate America. For example, The $3bn accounting fraud by WorldCom.
We must stay way from all of this corruption. This does not means we spend our day and night in the darkness of our mosques.
Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) æóáóÇ ÊóäÓó äóÕöíÈóßó ãöäó ÇáÏøõäúíóÇ -"...and do not neglect your portion of the worldly life.”
Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) has revealed for us a complete system, which deals with trade and economy based on Taqwa.
As Muslims we must seek the bounty of this world, according to the Islamic sharia, if we follow the sharia in our trade and transaction then we will be with the Prophets, truthful and the Martyrs.

and finally
The messenger of Allah said: “The truthful trustworthy merchant will be with the prophets, truthful and martyr”
Islam has forbidden fraud, deceit and cheating, we need to make sure that we are honest in our dealings so if we are selling a second hand car which may have faults then we need to tell the buyer about the faults. The prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said: “whosoever cheats, he is not one of us”
And we are employees, we need to make sure that we fulfil our contracts, for example it’s a common practice for employees to take time off under the pretext of being sick. We need to make sure that we don’t do this and we need to honour our contract. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) said:
íóÇ ÃóíøõåóÇ ÇáøóÐöíäó ÂãóäõæÇú ÃóæúÝõæÇú ÈöÇáúÚõÞõæÏö
“O you believe fulfil your contract”.
Too often we have seen Muslims fighting with each other over work and money. Let us follow the Sunnah and draw up contracts and define the roles and responsibilities.
So if we are going to hire some one then we should let him know his wage before he starts the work. The prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said, “whosoever hired a person he has to inform his wage”
If we have debts and we are able to pay, then we must pay debts without delay, the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said,’ "The delay by the rich is unjust.”
If we follow these Ahkam then our disputes will be solved and fighting will come to an end.
Now I am going to address a controversial issue. It’s a controversial issue for us but not for Allah and his messenger. It’s the issue of getting a mortgage; we all know that getting a mortgage is Haram with a capital H. As usual some of have make excuses and even say so and so imam and scholar we can take it because it’s necessary. O, Muslims pay attention to Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) has to say about the one who does not leave the usury.
Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) said:
ÝóÅöä áøóãú ÊóÝúÚóáõæÇú ÝóÃúÐóäõæÇú ÈöÍóÑúÈò ãøöäó Çááøåö æóÑóÓõæáöåö
“and if you do not, then take notice of war (against you) from Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) and His Messenger” (2.289)
O Muslims, it’s not a war against America or Britain or any human power, which could win. It’s a war against the creator of the heavens of the earth, it’s war against the one who gives life and takes like life, it’s a war against the one who will decide who goes to hell and the one who enters paradise.
It is war against Allah, the almighty and powerful.
It’s war where we will loose for certain.
Yes, there are other alternatives like renting although it may be expensive. But the choice is simple – either material loss in this world or war with Allah and Messenger!
Moreover, we must remember who is on charge of rizk?
æóãóÇ ãöä ÏóÂÈøóÉò Ýöí ÇáÃóÑúÖö ÅöáÇøó Úóáóì Çááøåö ÑöÒúÞõåóÇ
Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) “and no moving creature is there on earth but it’s provision is due from Allah” (TMQ 11: 6)
Dear Muslims, so do not fear for your rizk, it’s Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) who is in charge of the Rizk. We must hold onto the Halal and Haram, and not sacrifice our deen for this life but sacrifice this limited life for an eternal life in the Akhira.
We as Muslims must live by Islam so that we a shining example to the oppressed people of the west. If we don’t follow the Ahkham sharia all our affairs.. Then what is the difference between our children and the children of the Kuffar? If we cheat and deal in riba then what is the difference between Islamic economic system and the Capitalist system?
Dear Muslims, We as Muslims have responsibility offering this truth to kuffar by living by the truth. We as Muslims must be like the early Muslim traders; who were the ambassador of Islam. By their shining example the people of West Africa, East Africa and Indonesia embraced Islam. We as Muslims must be the witness over the people in the western society by living by Islam. If we don’t do this then we fail in our duty.
Dear Muslims, I am not going to say to you that it is easy to live in this society. It is not easy to bring up our children according to Islam. It is not easy to protect ourselves from the corrupt culture of free mixing and lewdness.
It is not easy not easy to provide secure home for our families without usury.
It is not easy to work and make money without getting involved in Haram transaction.
We need realise living in the west is a test from
Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala). Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) tests us continuously, so as to see who are the truthful ones. Allah (Subhanahu Wa Ta’aala) said:
ÃóÍóÓöÈó ÇáäøóÇÓõ Ãóä íõÊúÑóßõæÇ Ãóä íóÞõæáõæÇ ÂãóäøóÇ æóåõãú áóÇ íõÝúÊóäõæäó
“Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: "We believe," and will not be tested.
And We indeed tested those who were before them. And Allâh will certainly make (it) known those who are true, and will certainly make it known those who are liars.”
Then we will have the same honour and reward like the companion of the prophet.
The Prophet said: "After you there are going to be days of patience. The patience during that time is like the one clutching on to a hot coal. The one who works and does good deeds during that time will receive the reward of fifty men who do deeds similar to him". They asked, "O Messenger of Allaah, fifty people of them [at that time]?" He answered, "The reward of fifty from among you [the Companions]" [Abu Dawud, at- Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah]
